We are recruiting households for a pilot study on PFAS (“forever chemicals”) presence in drinking water connected to Lake Washington, part of the Upper Basin of the St. Johns River.
What are PFAS?
- Man-made chemicals used in household + industrial products
- Linked to illness (some cancers, thyroid + reproductive health harms)
- They don’t easily break down in the environment or people
- Can pose a health risk at 4 parts per trillion in drinking water
How do PFAS get into drinking water?
- PFAS may be entering waterbodies from upstream sources, including biosolids (aka sewage sludge)
- Conventional water treatment processes do not completely remove all PFAS compounds
Study Eligibility
- Receives drinking water from Lake Washington
- Resides in Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach, Satellite Beach, Palm Shores, Melbourne Village, unincorporated Brevard south of Pineda Causeway
