Litter and our River
Litter is a serious pollution problem that pollutes our waterways, harms wildlife, degrades aquatic habitats, and reduces recreational opportunities.
When discarded on land, litter often gets picked up by the wind or washes into streams and storm drains that discharge into the St. Johns River or its tributaries.
- Litter pollutes our St. Johns River. As some types of litter degrade, such as plastics, Styrofoam, and cigarette butts, they release harmful chemicals and microplastics that contaminate the water and soil.
- Litter can kill or injure wildlife. Animals can suffocate or drown when they become entangled in debris, such as old nets or fishing line. Many species mistake plastic debris for food, which can damage their digestive tract, interfere with their ability to feed, and cause other serious health problems.
- Litter and trash can clog creeks and streams, reducing water flow, causing flooding, and destroying habitats. Clogged waterways also often create breeding grounds for bacteria and disease-carrying insects.
Once in our waterways, litter becomes much more difficult to access and remove. The longer it remains, the more likely it will break down into microplastics and smaller pieces and release dangerous chemicals, compounding the problem.
It is critical that we prevent litter and trash from making its way into our waterways in the first place.
Our River, Our Responsibility
Here are some ways that you can help prevent litter and protect your river:
- Secure trash and debris in your vehicle, truck beds, and boats to prevent it from blowing out
- Use reusable items, such as reusable shopping bags and travel mugs, to reduce waste
- Avoid single-use plastics and Styrofoam, when possible
- Recycle
- Participate in community cleanups
- Only allow rain down the storm drains
Litter Station Initiative
As part of an Eagle Project, Litter Stations are being built and installed along the river and her tributaries in the Jacksonville area by Anna Loudy, Troop 9101. If you see one, be sure to do your part while you enjoy your day exploring the St. Johns!
