VOG Creation Workshop
October 18, 2025 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

VOG Creation Workshop | Saturday, October 18 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Jacksonville University Marine Science Research Institute Building
St. Johns RIVERKEEPER, CCA Florida and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University have teamed up to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) Program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments.
Event Details
We are hosting an assembly workshop to build a third batch of VOGs for local residents. There will be stations to punch holes in the recycled oyster shells, string them on the rope, and tie them. Bring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid.
