Lynda L. Orth Next Wave Leadership Academy
The Lynda L. Orth Next Wave Leadership Academy is designed for high school students passionate about the St. Johns River, environmental protection, water quality, community engagement, and conservation. We seek creative, motivated youth (grades 9-12) from all backgrounds. Up to 15 students will be selected for this summer program, which includes hands-on ecological learning, leadership opportunities, community projects, and public outreach.
St. Johns Riverkeeper is launching a the Lynda L. Orth Next Wave Leadership Academy to inspire and equip the next generation of river advocates. This summer, 12-15 students will take part in hands-on field experiences, advocacy training, and a student-led final project that directly benefits the St. Johns River and our community.
Things to know before you apply:
- Open to high school students in grades 9-12
- Mandatory meeting dates: June 4, 11, 18, 25 | July 2, 9, 16, 23
- Meeting location: Jacksonville University
- Lunch will be provided weekly
- There will be an associated fee of $100 upon acceptance. If you have any questions/concerns about the fee, please contact jamie@stjohnsriverkeeper.org.

What to Expect
Students who participate in this summer leadership program will:
- Expand your knowledge about the St. Johns River
- Participate in hands-on environmental science projects (water quality testing, vertical oyster garden (VOG) building and installation, etc.)
- Discuss important topics like advocacy, civic engagement, climate change, environmental justice, and community leadership – and learn how they relate to the St. Johns River
- Learn about and get involved with timely St. Johns Riverkeeper initiatives
- Take a boat trip on the St. Johns River
- Design and complete a real-world advocacy or stewardship project that benefits the St. Johns River and builds leadership skills
