SUMMARY:Lit Chat Interview with Cynthia Barnett
DESCRIPTION:Lit Chat Interview with Cynthia Barnett | Saturday\, May 10 from 1-2 p.m. | Jacksonville Public Library: Downtown Main Library\nCynthia Barnett is an award-winning author and journalist who has covered water and climate change stories worldwide—reporting from the rainiest place on earth in Cherrapunji\, India\, on epic drought in Perth\, Australia\, or on the American folly of building in swamplands with too much water and deserts without enough. \nHer latest book\, The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans\, was named one of the best science books of the year by NPR’s Science Friday. “The seashell might seem a decidedly small foundation for a book\,” The New York Times wrote\, “but Barnett’s account remarkably spirals out\, appropriately\, to become a much larger story about the sea\, about global history and about environmental crises and preservation.” \nProgram Description\nThis Lit Chat Interview is a 60-minute program consisting of a 40-minute conversation between author Cynthia Barnett and your St. Johns Riverkeeper\, Lisa Rinaman\, followed by 20 minutes of audience Q&A. A book signing will follow\, with books available for sale on site by local bookstore The BookMark. \nRegister\nThis event is free with a library card. Registration is required to reserve your seat. You can get a free library card\, if you don’t already have one\, here. \nRegister with the Jacksonville Public Library.

SUMMARY:Paddle the Ocklawaha
DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Ocklawaha with Adventure Outpost | Saturday\, May 31 or Tuesday\, June 17 | 10 a.m. | Ocklawaha River (Palatka)\nJoin us for a 3.5 hour paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport. Also on this site is Davenport Mound\, an ancient Indian burial site first excavated in the 1800’s. \nPrice\nTour & Kayak Rental: $55 \nBring Your Own Kayak/Board: $45 \nRegister\nTo register to join us\, please call Adventure Outpost at (386) 497-4214. Mention the date (May 31\, or June 17) and St. Johns Riverkeeper and have your payment information ready to secure your reservation.
