SUMMARY:Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell
DESCRIPTION:Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell Presented by the Jacksonville Public Library in partnership with St. Johns Riverkeeper and the Jacksonville Climate Coalition\nSaturday\, May 18 at 2 p.m. | Downtown Main Library (303 N Laura St.)\nJoin St. Johns Riverkeeper and Jacksonville Climate Coalition in partnership with the Jacksonville Public Library for a Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell\, award-winning author of The Heat Will Kill You First. This Lit Chat Interview is a 60-minute program consisting of a 40-minute conversation between author Jeff Goodell and interviewer Nikesha Elise Williams followed by 20 minutes of audience Q&A. A book signing will follow\, with books available for sale on site. \nFrom 1:30-2 p.m. and after the Lit Chat\, nonprofits and experts will be on hand with information about solutions to climate change and heat. \nRegister here through the Jacksonville Public Library. You must have a current (free) library card to register. If you already have a library card\, you’ll need your PIN – if you haven’t changed your PIN\, it’s your MMDD birthday (e.g. 0101 for January 1). If that doesn’t work\, you can call 255-BOOK to reset the PIN. \nFrom the author’s website: “An explosive\, completely new understanding of heat\, the lethal force which threatens every living cell on Earth. New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Goodell presents a deeply-reported examination of the impact that temperature rise will have on our lives and on our planet\, offering a vital new perspective on where we are headed\, how we can prepare\, and what is at stake if we fail to act.” \nAs the planet warms\, all our assumptions are going to be upended…The Heat Will Kill You First is essential reading for anyone who cares about the future. – Elizabeth Kolbert\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction \nThe climate crisis brings no greater threat than the prospect of deadly extreme heat…Jeff Goodell brings a mix of fantastic storytelling\, lucid scientific communication\, and eternal optimism in detailing the profound threat we face with the climate crisis and what we can still do about it. – Michael E. Mann\, author of The New Climate War \n30 million: Number of people who live in extreme heat today (above 85 degrees mean annual temperature) \n2 billion: Number of people who are likely to live in extreme heat in 2070 \n250\,000: Annual worldwide deaths from firearms \n489\,000: Annual worldwide deaths from extreme heat \nExtreme heat is the number-one weather-related cause of death in the U.S.\, killing more people most years than hurricanes\, floods and tornadoes combined. \nStudies show that children don’t learn as well\, more crime occurs\, suicide rates rise\, workers are less productive\, and health problems worsen when it is really hot. \nHeat also puts an unequal burden on more vulnerable populations\, such as older and lower-income people\, outdoor workers\, and prisoners. \nRegister\nRegister here through the Jacksonville Public Library. You must have a current (free) library card to register. \nIf you already have a library card\, you’ll need your PIN to register – if you haven’t changed your PIN\, it’s your MMDD birthday (e.g. 0101 for January 1). SUMMARY:Brewing Up Solutions: Indian River County
DESCRIPTION:Brewing Up Solutions | For the River\nSt. Johns Riverkeeper (SJRK) is expanding its Brewing Up Solutions brewery series this year to be watershed-wide. We’re Brewing Up Solutions For the River with people who love the St. Johns from the headwaters to the mouth of the river. Beginning in the headwaters of the St. Johns River in Indian River County\, we will travel downstream stopping along the way until we reach the Atlantic Ocean in Mayport\, Duval County. Join us for monthly roundtable discussions that highlight various parts of our vibrant river\, adjacent watersheds\, and key figures along our journey. \nFuture locations for this series will include Sanford\, Palatka\, St. Augustine\, Jacksonville\, and Mayport. \nLaunch Date: June 26\, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Walking Tree Brewery (3209 Dodger Road\, Vero Beach) – Register Here\nTopic: Grove Land Reservoir – Risks to the St. Johns and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL)\nOn June 12\, the Governor signed his budget that included a last-minute maneuver that appropriates $400 million dollars to the SJRWMD to acquire\, permit and construct the Grove Land Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area\, which will flood the Upper St. Johns River with polluted water from South Florida. \nAs currently designed\, Grove Land will deliver the majority of water to the St. Johns River basin when the river is already high. The additional water would either cause downstream flooding in the St. Johns or would require discharge to the IRL via the C-54 canal. It would also increase phosphorus loads in violation of downstream water quality protections. \nAdvocates for the health of the IRL and the St. Johns River will join forces to ensure that both water bodies are protected equally from this unsustainable project. \nRegister\nPlease RSVP here to let us know you plan to join us. \nHost: Lisa Rinaman\, St. Johns Riverkeeper: The chief advocate and public’s voice for the St. Johns River\nHer responsibilities include holding regulatory agencies and those polluting the river accountable; identifying and advocating for solutions that will protect and restore the river; working with government entities\, businesses\, community leaders and citizens to resolve problems that impact the river’s health; and communicating with the media and the public to educate and raise awareness about important river-related issues. \nLisa was instrumental in the creation of Waterkeepers Florida\, a formal collaboration of 15 Waterkeeper Alliance programs united across the state. She is also one of the founding members of the Reunite the Rivers Coalition working to reconnect Silver Springs\, the Ocklawaha and the St. Johns as the Great Florida Riverway. In addition\, Lisa serves on the Florida Springs Council Board. \nShe enjoys Florida’s waters and natural wonders with her husband\, Mark\, and two boys\, Mark Jr. and August. \nSpecial Guest: Jim Moir: Indian Riverkeeper\, Executive Director\nJim is a husband and father\, Florida native and resident of Stuart\, Florida for 24 years. He is civically engaged and passionate about protecting the Indian River Lagoon and its coastal margins. \nHe is currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Marine Resources Council\, and has served as Appointee to the Martin County Local Planning Agency since 2002\, and is a member of the Leadership Team of the Rivers Coalition\, and member and supporter of many local civic and environmental groups. \nJim facilitates ocean science projects specializing in bioacoustics\, marine animal surveys\, and the deployment of autonomous vehicles and data collection devices. He is currently involved with several citizen science projects and marine mammal stranding networks\, he often volunteers with coastal restoration efforts and exotic invasive species control programs.

It will also illustrate the role the park and its creek play in sustaining St Johns River health. \nThe outing will begin at the bridge in River Oaks Park near Brookwood Road and proceed westward along Craig Creek to the St Johns River and then back to the bridge. The event will include a walk through the park to collect trash and debris with stops to discuss the park vegetation and the role it plays in sustaining river health. A master naturalist will identify native species to be maintained and invasive species to be removed. A representative from St Johns Riverkeeper will discuss the role of the park and Craig Creek in sustaining St Johns River health. \nWhat to Bring/Wear\n\nComfortable\, water-resistant shoes or boots (Especially if you plan to help pick up trash – the grassy areas of the park and the creek bank tend to be wet.)\nProtective clothing (hat\, sunglasses) and sunscreen\nFULL reusable water bottle\n\nThere are no restrooms and/or portlets in the park\, so plan accordingly. \nRegister\nRSVP here to let us know you’re planning to join us. Event participants will be required to sign a liability wavier while registering for the event. \nDirections and Parking\nThe address for River Oaks Park is 1000 River Oaks Road\, but the outing will begin at the bridge across Craig Creek at the East end of the park near Brookwood Road. Parking along Brookwood Road is limited\, so consider parking in the Southside Methodist Church parking area adjacent to San Jose Blvd and walking to the starting location. \nGPS Coordinates for Starting Location: 30°17.6990’N\, 81°38.9300’W \nLearn More\nJacksonville Parks and Recreation Information about River Oaks Park \nRiver Oaks Park Offers Window to Jacksonville (Jacksonville.com article) \nParks of San Marco (Metro Jacksonville article) \nCraig Creek at River Oaks Park and Oriental Gardens (Jax Psycho Geo article)

SUMMARY:Henry Klutho Park Cleanup with With Love\, Jax
DESCRIPTION:Henry Klutho Park Cleanup with With Love\, Jax | Friday\, September 13\, 2024 from 1-3 p.m. at Henry Klutho Park\nHelp With Love\, Jax clean up Henry Klutho Park before their Dare to D.I.S.C. charity disc golf tournament!
