DESCRIPTION:Join us for a paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided\, and we’ll navigate past numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that in some places stretch a half-mile back from the main channel. Here\, we find a menagerie of wildlife that love such places. We’ll step back in time and see very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be getting a lot of use out of their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 12\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nWhen we make our way back downstream\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport\, which is adjacent to the Davenport Mound\, an ancient Indian burial site first excavated in the 1800’s. \nThis is an easy-paced paddle on the slow-moving tannin-stained waters and usually takes about 3-4 hours. \nRegistration is Closed – This Event is Sold Out!\nWe’ve added a second date since this event reached capacity so quickly. There will be a brief program followed by a chance to mingle with these extraordinary honorees. The celebration will include food trucks\, drink specials\, and music by Damion Waters. \nREGISTER\nSchedule of Events\nSt. Johns River Paddle | 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Swashbuckler’s Marina & Bar (launch/takeout)\nPaddle Spalding’s Lower Store (approx. 6 miles) with experts Dean Campbell\, Sam Carr\, Jane Goddard\, Jim Durocher\, and Ray Whaley. This is the premier William Bartram paddle in Florida. It features sheltered conditions\, historic importance\, and a natural setting. The trip may include a creek excursion and will include a brief view of the barge canal entrance on the way to Trout Creek. \nPaddlers who wish to caravan to the launch can meet at 7:30 a.m. at Azalea City Brewing (120 S. 7th St.\, Palatka\, FL). \nBring your own kayak\, paddle\, PFD\, whistle\, water bottle and snacks. Sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses\, and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. No pets or children under 15 years old. DESCRIPTION:Explore Fort Drum Marsh & Blue Cypress Lake\nJoin us to explore where the St. Johns River begins. \nThe Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area is where our river begins its 310-mile journey. Its mosaic of wetlands and uplands are a sight to see\, accessed by a meandering boardwalk through its blackwater hardwood swamp where the sunlight is muted by the cover of cypress\, cedar trees and sabal palms. \nBlue Cypress is the first lake of the St. Johns River\, known as the River of Lakes. It is also one of the most important\, highly-concentrated nesting areas for Ospreys in North America. This trip is scheduled during nesting season when populations are at their peak. \nRegister\nPlease register by March 21. \nSchedule of Events\n9-11 a.m.\nPaddle the Headwaters – Bring your own boat. \nPontoon Boat Eco Tour led by Dr. Richard Baker – Richard H. Join us for an eight-mile round-trip paddle of the Wekiva River\, an important tributary of the St. Johns\, as we celebrate Bill’s life and legacy. \nPaddle the Wekiva River from Wilsons Landing\, upstream to the confluence of the Wekiva and Little Wekiva River\, and back to Wilsons Landing. We will meet up at Wilson’s Landing Park (379 Malekean Trail\, Sanford\, FL 32771) at 9:30 a.m. to unload and park (facilities available). \nThis is an eight-mile round-trip paddle\, mostly full sun.
