SUMMARY:Ocklawaha Paddle with Adventure Outpost
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided\, and we’ll navigate past numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that in some places stretch a half-mile back from the main channel. Here\, we find a menagerie of wildlife that love such places. We’ll step back in time and see very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be getting a lot of use out of their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 12\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nWhen we make our way back downstream\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport\, which is adjacent to the Davenport Mound\, an ancient Indian burial site first excavated in the 1800’s. \nThis is an easy-paced paddle on the slow-moving tannin-stained waters and usually takes about 3-4 hours. \nRegister\nTo register\, please call Adventure Outpost at (386) 497-4214. Mention the date (March 4) and St. Johns Riverkeeper and have your payment information ready (they accept VISA and MasterCard) to secure your reservation. \nCost\n$55 (includes kayak rental) \n$40 (bring your own)

SUMMARY:River Rising: Brewing Up Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 13 | 6 p.m. | Southern Swells Brewing Company\nClimate change and rising waters are undermining the health of our river\, our beaches\, our community\, and our economy. It is critical that we all do our part now to tackle climate change to protect our waterways and the future of Northeast Florida. \nJacksonville University’s Dr. Jeremy Stalker will chat with Lisa Rinaman\, your St. Johns Riverkeeper\, and share how rising waters are damaging Northeast Florida waterways. We’ll discuss how we can act locally to do our part to fight climate change while protecting our waters. \nThis is part of our 2023 series of brewery conversations exploring solutions to climate change\, sea level rise\, and the pollution problems threatening the health of our river and our communities. Brought to you by St. Johns Riverkeeper’s Water Policy Group. \nRegister\nRSVP and let us know you’re coming. \nRiver Rising: Why it Matters\nRising sea levels are making storm surge events worse\, causing more septic tanks to fail\, undermining infrastructure\, pushing saltwater further upstream\, and threatening the health of our river and our communities. \nNow is the time to ensure that the St. Johns River is resilient and healthy enough to withstand more frequent shocks to its system and for all of us to address the underlying causes of climate change.
