Nature and technology dissolve into one\, reshaping what it means to be human. \nAbout the Author\nSarah Clarke Stuart is a Professor of English at FSCJ where she teaches literature\, film\, composition\, and emerging technologies. Stuart has published various nonfiction works\, and Song of the Unsung Mushroom\, her debut novel\, is a coming-of-age science fiction story set in Jacksonville\, Florida. She contributed for many years to First Coast Magazine and Flamingo Magazine with articles grounded in a curious appreciation for the natural landscapes and stories of the region. Cleanup bags\, gloves and grabbers will be provided. \nUseful Items to Bring:\n\nFULL reusable water bottle\nClosed-toe shoes (Required. We HIGHLY recommend wearing rain boots! This park is prone to flooding and general sogginess.)\nSun protection (sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses)\nBug spray\nWork/gardening gloves (cleanup gloves will be provided)\nSmall garden tools (trowels\, shovels\, etc.)\n\nRegister\nPlease register to let us know you’ll be joining us so we can plan accordingly. \nSafety Precautions\n\nEveryone must register/sign a liability waiver to participate.\nAn adult must accompany youth under 18 years of age.\nStay together and work in teams of at least two people.\nWatch your footing\, avoid steep embankments\, and use caution when walking through tall grass or brush.\nDo not use your bare hands to pick up broken glass or sharp items. DESCRIPTION:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop with CCA Florida and Conservation Florida | Saturday\, October 3 | 9 a.m. – Noon | Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER has partnered with CCA Florida and Jacksonville University to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. \nVolunteers can expect to take part in the following tasks:\n\nShovel shells into buckets/ wheelbarrow and bring to work site\nCut rope lengths\, burn ends\, make ends tight so shells can string easily\, tie a knot at one end of the rope\nDrill hole in each shell with drill press\nString shells and tie off ropes\n\nBring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid. \nRSVP\nReserve your spot in here! Beneath the surface\, they’re one of nature’s most powerful tools — a keystone species that filters and cleans vast volumes of water\, buffers shorelines from storms\, and anchors entire estuary ecosystems. \nBut the reefs are vanishing. Ninety percent of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed in the last thirty years\, and Florida’s own Apalachicola Bay is slipping toward the same fate under the pressures of pollution\, coastal development\, and overharvesting. The film makes a hopeful case: shell recycling\, artificial reefs\, and freshwater management can still turn the tide. \nThat work is already underway right here in Jacksonville. We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport. This grant will provide a permanent source of income for organizations that Mrs. Weaver has generously supported for many years. It is her hope that other individuals will make similar permanent gifts to organizations that have been important to them. This Fund is one of a collection of Funds established by Delores Barr Weaver at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Mrs. Weaver has an extraordinary legacy of philanthropy\, and she has provided transformative support to dozens of nonprofit organizations that uplift\, enlighten and advance our community. Her establishment of the Delores Barr Weaver Fund ($50 million) in 2012 was the largest gift in The Community Foundation’s history.

Despite improvements\, their mission reveals ongoing challenges to this historic waterway’s ecosystem. \nThis powerful film chronicles the decades-long commitment\, passion\, and grassroots advocacy required to protect and preserve the vital river ecosystem of the Hudson River.
