SUMMARY:Paddle the Ocklawaha
DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Ocklawaha with Adventure Outpost | Saturday\, October 10 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Ocklawaha River (Palatka)\nJoin us for a 3.5 hour paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport. Also on this site is Davenport Mound\, an ancient Indian burial site first excavated in the 1800’s. \nPrice\nTour & Kayak Rental: $65 \nBring Your Own Kayak/Board: $50 \nRegister\nTo register to join us\, please call Adventure Outpost at (386) 497-4214. Mention the date (October 10) and St. Johns Riverkeeper and have your payment information ready to secure your reservation.

SUMMARY:Florida Climate Week
DESCRIPTION:Florida Climate Week | October 5-11\, 2026\nNow in its sixth year\, Florida Climate Week is a powerful celebration of engagement\, education\, and collective action focused on climate and resilience challenges facing our state. \nJacksonville Events\nRiverview Boat Excursion | Monday\, October 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. | Riverview Park Boat Ramp\nJoin St. Johns Riverkeeper\, Riverview Collective Community Organization (RCCO) and COJ Sustainability Department during Florida Climate Week sponsored by the VOLO Foundation as we explore the Trout River and discuss opportunities for access\, water quality and infrastructure improvements. \nThe trip will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on October 5th. Please arrive at Riverview Park Boat Ramp by 5:15pm so we can board\, receive the safety instructions\, and be on our way! \nUNFILTERED – The Truth About Oysters: Film Screening & Panel | Tuesday\, October 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. | Highlands Regional Library\nThis Emmy award-winning documentary reveals the oyster’s hidden double life. On our plates\, they’re a delicacy and a livelihood. Beneath the surface\, they’re one of nature’s most powerful tools — a keystone species that filters and cleans vast volumes of water\, buffers shorelines from storms\, and anchors entire estuary ecosystems. \nBut the reefs are vanishing. Ninety percent of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed in the last thirty years\, and Florida’s own Apalachicola Bay is slipping toward the same fate under the pressures of pollution\, coastal development\, and overharvesting. The film makes a hopeful case: shell recycling\, artificial reefs\, and freshwater management can still turn the tide. \nThat work is already underway right here in Jacksonville. Along the Ribault\, Trout\, and St. Johns Rivers\, we’re putting these same nature-based solutions into practice — building Pervious Oyster Shell Habitat (POSH) modules and Vertical Oyster Gardens to restore living shorelines\, and helping launch a recycled oyster shell collection system that gives discarded shells a second life as new reef. Every oyster we return to the water is another filter cleaning the St. Johns. \nAfter the film: Stay for a conversation with local panelists who are harnessing the power of oysters to restore and filter the St. Johns River — and learn how you can get involved. \nRSVP here to reserve your spot!

SUMMARY:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop with CCA Florida and Conservation Florida | Saturday\, October 3 | 9 a.m. – Noon | Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER has partnered with CCA Florida and Jacksonville University to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. \nVolunteers can expect to take part in the following tasks:\n\nShovel shells into buckets/ wheelbarrow and bring to work site\nCut rope lengths\, burn ends\, make ends tight so shells can string easily\, tie a knot at one end of the rope\nDrill hole in each shell with drill press\nString shells and tie off ropes\n\nBring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid. \nRSVP\nReserve your spot in here! Spots are limited in the workshop. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend. \nSt. Johns River VOG Program\nLearn more about the St. Johns River VOG Program here. If you live on the St. Johns River\, or a tributary\, north of the Arlington River – you can request your own VOGs.

SUMMARY:Literature and the St. Johns: Conversation with Sarah Clarke Stuart
DESCRIPTION:Literature and the St. Johns: Conversation with Sarah Clarke Stuart | Tuesday\, August 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Aardwolf Brewing\nJoin us for an intimate book-club style conversation with local author\, Sarah Clarke Stuart. Whether you’ve read the book or not\, you’ll enjoy this discussion about the places and inspirations behind Stuart’s book\, Song of the Unsung Mushroom\, which is set along the St. Johns River. What better way to explore the St. Johns during the high heat of the summer than by immersing yourself in a book. \nAfter a hurricane strikes a small Florida town\, young Claire is never the same. Years later\, her brother Gunther is still haunted by the suspicion that she was taken and replaced by something not quite human. Set in the wild landscapes of northern Florida and Western Appalachia\, this eco-fiction (cli-fi) story is a lyrical\, genre-blurring novel about loss\, identity\, and the hidden intelligence that pulses beneath our feet. Nature and technology dissolve into one\, reshaping what it means to be human. \nAbout the Author\nSarah Clarke Stuart is a Professor of English at FSCJ where she teaches literature\, film\, composition\, and emerging technologies. Stuart has published various nonfiction works\, and Song of the Unsung Mushroom\, her debut novel\, is a coming-of-age science fiction story set in Jacksonville\, Florida. She contributed for many years to First Coast Magazine and Flamingo Magazine with articles grounded in a curious appreciation for the natural landscapes and stories of the region. Both Sarah’s fiction and current research are rooted in ecological interests and a deep sense of place and physical embodiment. \nYou can find the book locally at San Marco Books\, Happy Medium Books Cafe\, and The Next Chapter. You can also find it on Amazon in multiple formats including Kindle and Audiobook\, as well as any where you get your audiobooks. AND it is now in the main collection at the Jacksonville Public Library! \nRSVP\nThis is a free event\, but please let us know you plan to join here!
