SUMMARY:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop with CCA Florida & Jacksonville University MSRI
DESCRIPTION:CCA Florida is teaming up with St. Johns RIVERKEEPER and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments. The first step is an assembly workshop to build the first batch of VOGs. \nRegister\nPlease RSVP here. This workshop is limited to the first 40 volunteers that sign up.

In addition\, Lisa serves on the Florida Springs Council Board. \nShe enjoys Florida’s waters and natural wonders with her husband\, Mark\, and two boys\, Mark Jr. and August. \nSpecial Guest: Anne Coglianese\, The City of Jacksonville’s Chief Resilience Officer (CRO)\nAnne Coglianese is the Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Jacksonville. In this capacity\, Anne leads the development of resilience initiatives to ensure Jacksonville can adapt and thrive in the face of acute shocks and chronic stresses brought on by climate change. Prior to joining the City of Jacksonville\, Anne served as the Coastal Resilience Manager for the City of New Orleans where she implemented nature-based solutions to sea-level risk and coastal land loss. Anne’s previous experience also includes serving at the White House Council on Environmental Quality\, where she participated in the development of climate adaptation and resilience policies to meet the Obama Administration’s resilience goals.

This scenic park just off Hogan’s Creek in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville was named in honor of famed architect Henry J. Klutho. \nPark History\nThe Hogans Creek Improvement Project of 1929-30\, designed by architect Henry Klutho (1873-1964) and engineered by Charles Imeson\, turned much of the park grounds into a lovely Venetian-style promenade. The City renamed a portion of Springfield Park in 1984 to honor Mr. Klutho\, a Springfield resident whose high-rise buildings in downtown and Prairie School of architecture transformed Jacksonville after the Great Fire of 1901. \nRegister\nPlease register in advance so we can get an idea of how many volunteers to expect\, and to receive any event updates.

Catch the beginnings of the sunset as we cruise down this beautiful river. \nThe Ribault River has abundant grass beds that serve as critical nurseries for fish\, plus areas for nature viewing\, birdwatching\, and fishing. There is a plethora of wildlife in the area such as the Northern Cardinal\, Red Winged Black Bird\, Eastern Bluebird\, and Northern Mockingbird. The plant life is diverse with different species such as Alligatorweed\, Pontederia Crassipes\, and Parrot Feather Watermilfoil. The event will showcase the River Oaks Park in San Marco\, its lush plant life\, Craig Creek\, and the St Johns River. The event will illustrate the role the park plays in sustaining community vibrancy and resiliency. It will also illustrate the role the park and its creek play in sustaining St Johns River health. \nThe outing will begin at the bridge in River Oaks Park near Brookwood Road and proceed westward along Craig Creek to the St Johns River and then back to the bridge. The event will include a walk through the park to collect trash and debris with stops to discuss the park vegetation and the role it plays in sustaining river health. A master naturalist will identify native species to be maintained and invasive species to be removed. He is also a local tournament angler. \nTim has taken a special interest in the river through noticing a decline in its habitat and health. He serves on the board of the Mighty River Recovery\, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving fish and wildlife habitat on Florida’s St. Johns River\, while working to organize and unify outdoor enthusiasts. \nTim was instrumental in the SAV protective enclosure initiative set forth by Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). Tim was the lead organizer in recruiting volunteers to install these SAV protective enclosures in the St. Johns in an attempt to bring back this vital habitat.

Lomberk holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Florida as well as a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law with a certificate in Environmental & Land Use Law and Policy. As a Student Associate in the Conservation Clinic at UF Law\, Lomberk worked on projects spanning a broad spectrum of environmental issues ranging from municipal beach regulation in the state of Florida to national park management in The Bahamas. After becoming a licensed attorney\, Lomberk served as the Staff Attorney for Alachua Conservation Trust and the Director of Special Projects for the University of Florida Levin College of Law Conservation Clinic\, focusing on the use of conservation easements to protect sea turtle nesting habitat. Lomberk took the helm as the Matanzas Riverkeeper in December of 2017 and currently serves as the Chair of the Waterkeepers Florida regional entity. \nParking

The additional water would either cause downstream flooding in the St. Johns or would require discharge to the IRL via the C-54 canal.
