Catch the beginnings of the sunset as we cruise down this beautiful river. \nThe Ribault River has abundant grass beds that serve as critical nurseries for fish\, plus areas for nature viewing\, birdwatching\, and fishing. There is a plethora of wildlife in the area such as the Northern Cardinal\, Red Winged Black Bird\, Eastern Bluebird\, and Northern Mockingbird. The plant life is diverse with different species such as Alligatorweed\, Pontederia Crassipes\, and Parrot Feather Watermilfoil. The event will showcase the River Oaks Park in San Marco\, its lush plant life\, Craig Creek\, and the St Johns River. The event will illustrate the role the park plays in sustaining community vibrancy and resiliency. It will also illustrate the role the park and its creek play in sustaining St Johns River health. \nThe outing will begin at the bridge in River Oaks Park near Brookwood Road and proceed westward along Craig Creek to the St Johns River and then back to the bridge. The event will include a walk through the park to collect trash and debris with stops to discuss the park vegetation and the role it plays in sustaining river health. A master naturalist will identify native species to be maintained and invasive species to be removed. A representative from St Johns Riverkeeper will discuss the role of the park and Craig Creek in sustaining St Johns River health. \nWhat to Bring/Wear\n\nComfortable\, water-resistant shoes or boots (Especially if you plan to help pick up trash – the grassy areas of the park and the creek bank tend to be wet.)\nProtective clothing (hat\, sunglasses) and sunscreen\nFULL reusable water bottle\n\nThere are no restrooms and/or portlets in the park\, so plan accordingly. \nRegister\nRSVP here to let us know you’re planning to join us. We began in the headwaters of the St. Johns River in Indian River County\, and will travel downstream stopping along the way until we reach the Atlantic Ocean in Mayport\, Duval County. Join us for monthly roundtable discussions that highlight various parts of our vibrant river\, adjacent watersheds\, and key figures along our journey. \nThis month at Azalea City Brewing\, we will be discussing submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and our SAVe Our River’s Grasses expedition. In addition\, Lisa serves on the Florida Springs Council Board. \nShe enjoys Florida’s waters and natural wonders with her husband\, Mark\, and two boys\, Mark Jr. and August. \nSpecial Guest: Tim Mann\, Mighty River Recovery board member\nTim served with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) for 25 years and has been a tournament bass fishing angler for 3 decades. He fished Bassmaster Nation and Major Bass Fishing League (FLW BFL) tournaments in the past. He is also a local tournament angler. \nTim has taken a special interest in the river through noticing a decline in its habitat and health. He serves on the board of the Mighty River Recovery\, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving fish and wildlife habitat on Florida’s St. Johns River\, while working to organize and unify outdoor enthusiasts. \nTim was instrumental in the SAV protective enclosure initiative set forth by Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). Tim was the lead organizer in recruiting volunteers to install these SAV protective enclosures in the St. Johns in an attempt to bring back this vital habitat.

Lomberk holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Florida as well as a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law with a certificate in Environmental & Land Use Law and Policy. As a Student Associate in the Conservation Clinic at UF Law\, Lomberk worked on projects spanning a broad spectrum of environmental issues ranging from municipal beach regulation in the state of Florida to national park management in The Bahamas. After becoming a licensed attorney\, Lomberk served as the Staff Attorney for Alachua Conservation Trust and the Director of Special Projects for the University of Florida Levin College of Law Conservation Clinic\, focusing on the use of conservation easements to protect sea turtle nesting habitat. Lomberk took the helm as the Matanzas Riverkeeper in December of 2017 and currently serves as the Chair of the Waterkeepers Florida regional entity. \nParking

Capacity is limited\, so be sure to reserve your spot early! \nAbout Welaka National Fish Hatchery\nSince 1871\, National Fish Hatcheries have been applying science-based approaches to conservation challenges. We work with our partners and engage the public to conserve\, restore\, and enhance fish and other aquatic resources for the continuing benefit of the American people. Conservation is at the heart of what we do\, and we recognize that we do this work for the American people–both the present generation who benefit today and future generations who will inherit our legacy of conserving America’s aquatic resources. \nWelaka National Fish Hatchery is charged with producing Atlantic Striped Bass for the St. Johns River in order to maintain the population for ecological\, historical and economic purposes. The hatchery also works with Gulf Coast states to produce and protect Gulf of Mexico Striped Bass from Florida to Georgia and Alabama. Recently\, the hatchery has begun work with two federally listed species\, the federally threatened Eastern Indigo Snake and the federally endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. \nRegister\nRegistration is required. Join us for monthly roundtable discussions that highlight various parts of our vibrant river\, adjacent watersheds\, and key figures along our journey. \nFuture locations for this series will include Sanford\, Palatka\, St. Augustine\, Jacksonville\, and Mayport. \nLaunch Date: June 26\, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Walking Tree Brewery (3209 Dodger Road\, Vero Beach) – Register Here\nTopic: Grove Land Reservoir – Risks to the St. Johns and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL)\nOn June 12\, the Governor signed his budget that included a last-minute maneuver that appropriates $400 million dollars to the SJRWMD to acquire\, permit and construct the Grove Land Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area\, which will flood the Upper St. Johns River with polluted water from South Florida. \nAs currently designed\, Grove Land will deliver the majority of water to the St. Johns River basin when the river is already high. The additional water would either cause downstream flooding in the St. Johns or would require discharge to the IRL via the C-54 canal. SUMMARY:Wetland Preserve Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore further up the watershed at Wetland Preserve in Palatka! \nWe will be led by Wetland Preserve educators on a guided\, open-air vehicle (aka\, buggy!) tour of their conservation lands as we learn about the key role these forests and swamps play in improving our water quality. Following the tour participants are welcome to remain\, have lunch\, and explore the natural beauty of the area. \nAbout Wetland Preserve\nWetland Preserve’s primary parcel consists of 3\,800 acres\, all of which is protected by a Florida Forever conservation easement and also falls within the O2O wildlife corridor. \nWetland Preserve is adjacent to the Rice Creek Conservation Area\, a 5000 acre project of the Saint Johns River Water Management District located in Putnam County\, Florida. On the southern border is Nine Mile Swamp Park\, a 1268 acre conservation project owned by Putnam County.
