SUMMARY:VOG Creation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:VOG Creation Workshop | Saturday\, March 14 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Jacksonville University Marine Science Research Institute Building\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER\, CCA Florida and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University have teamed up to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) Program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments. \nEvent Details\nWe are hosting an assembly workshop to build a fourth batch of VOGs for local residents. There will be stations to punch holes in the recycled oyster shells\, string them on the rope\, and tie them. Bring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid. \nRegister\nRegister here to volunteer! SUMMARY:POSH Module Build - Living Shoreline for Riverview Park
DESCRIPTION:POSH Module Build – Living Shoreline for Riverview Park | Saturday\, May 9\nHelp us build Pervious Oyster Shell Habitat (POSH) Modules – 30-pound balls of recycled oyster shells and cement that form the foundation of a natural oyster reef along the Trout River. \nA single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day\, and as a reef grows\, it creates habitat for hundreds of aquatic species while acting as a natural buffer against coastal erosion and storm surges. \nOver 85% of natural oyster reefs have been lost worldwide. Every module we build helps turn that tide. \nIn August 2025\, volunteers installed 40 POSH Modules at Riverview Park\, creating approximately 140 feet of oyster reef. Now we’re growing it further. \nNo experience needed — just a willingness to get a little messy and a lot of heart for the river. \nVolunteer Shift 1: 8-11 a.m. at 2000 Ponte Vedra Blvd (parking lot by Guana Reserve Middle Beach)\nMorning shift volunteers will load 13.5 trash cans of recycled oyster shells and bring them to the GTM Research Reserve Welcome Center (505 Guana River Rd\, Ponte Vedra Beach\, FL 32082). It will likely take 2-3 trips. Loading the shells wont take up the entire shift\, so once complete volunteers will be able to start on the POSH Module molds. \nVolunteer Shift 2: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at GTM Research Reserve Welcome Center\nAfternoon shift volunteers will come straight to the GTM Research Reserve Welcome Center (505 Guana River Rd) to relieve the morning shift volunteers. You’ll get straight to work on creating the POSH Modules. The process involves mixing oyster shells\, cement\, and water into a cement mixer where shells will get an even coat of cement. They will then be poured into hexagonal molds. \nRegister here to participate in either shift. \nThe POSH Modules will be stored for about a month to cure. This is part of an ongoing effort to improve and maintain this important community resource connecting locals to our river on Jacksonville’s northside. \nVolunteers can expect to collect litter\, clear trails\, catalog and/or remove invasive plants\, and more as needed! Cleanup bags\, gloves and grabbers will be provided. \nUseful Items to Bring:\n\nFULL reusable water bottle\nClosed-toe shoes (Required. We HIGHLY recommend wearing rain boots! This park is prone to flooding and general sogginess.)\nSun protection (sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses)\nBug spray\nWork/gardening gloves (cleanup gloves will be provided)\nSmall garden tools (trowels\, shovels\, etc.)\n\nRegister\nPlease register to let us know you’ll be joining us so we can plan accordingly. \nSafety Precautions\n\nEveryone must register/sign a liability waiver to participate.\nAn adult must accompany youth under 18 years of age.\nStay together and work in teams of at least two people.\nWatch your footing\, avoid steep embankments\, and use caution when walking through tall grass or brush.\nDo not use your bare hands to pick up broken glass or sharp items.
