While the holiday is observed on February 2\, we will be celebrating with a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure day on Saturday\, February 7. \nWetlands are some of the most diverse and important ecosystems on the planet\, but they are also some of the most threatened. Wetlands provide us with a wealth of ecosystem services like water filtration\, flood prevention\, groundwater recharge\, and more; however threats like development and climate change pose significant danger to their existence. \nIn observation of World Wetlands Day\, we are providing you with a handful of opportunities to get out and explore some of our local wetlands. \nOption 1 includes a series of free events at Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve. Take a look at the schedule below\, and when you select “Get Tickets”\, learn more and sign-up for one or more activities! \nOption 2 is a guided Stand Up Paddle Board Tour at nearby Pottsburg Creek! \nDuring this event\, we will also be highlighting the importance of wetlands\, some local issues our wetlands have faced\, as well as some opportunities to help protect wetlands. \nOption 1: Choose Your Own Adventure at Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve\n\n9-9:45 a.m.: Morning Stretch and Mediation with the Naham Experience (field in front of Fort Caroline)\n10-11:30 a.m.: Birding Walk with Duval Audubon (Hammock Trail)\n12-2 p.m.: Hike with the Sierra Club (Spanish Pond Trail)\n\nGet Tickets\nRSVP here – you can get a free ticket for just one of these events\, or all three. \nOption 2: Stand-Up Paddle Board Tour with Earthwander Tours\n\n12-2 p.m.: Stand-Up Paddle Tour of Pottsburg Creek\n\nJoin Kayla on a guided paddle board tour at nearby Pottsburg Creek! DESCRIPTION:Lost Springs of the Ocklawaha Paddle with Adventure Outpost | Thursday\, February 5 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Ocklawaha River/Rodman Reservoir\nThis 4 hour (7-mile) downstream paddle will take us through a section of the Ocklawaha we rarely visit – the upper end of Rodman Reservoir. \nWe’ll begin in an area where the reservoir is very shallow\, so its influence is less dramatic than further down stream. The forest is largely intact and actually quite beautiful. Since this area is now usually covered with a thin sheet of water\, all but the most aquatic tree species remain. In some places we find pure stands of bald cypress. When the reservoir is full\, we can paddle among these cypress–a truly transcendent experience. However\, the reservoir is still a bit low from the recent drawdown so it might not yet be deep enough for paddling among the trees. \nAs we descend the river\, effects of the reservoir become increasingly apparent. The trees become more widely spaced and many show the signs of stress from the high water. By the time we reach our take-out\, few trees remain in the open reservoir. \nIn some places we also glimpse the arrow-straight\, 400-ft wide path that was to be the route of the barges\, had the canal been completed. Nature has made the best of the situation – as it always does – and birding is good in these areas. \nHighlights\nThis day’s route will take us past a couple of the 20+ springs that have been lost to Rodman Reservoir. Most of these springs are completely submerged when the reservoir is full\, but a couple in the upper reaches where we’ll be paddling on this trip are usually visible. \n\nRegister\nTo reserve your spot\, contact Lars Andersen at Adventure Outpost: (386) 497-4214. \nCost is $65 per person if you need to rent a kayak\, and $50 if you bring your own boat. Shuttling will be provided from the take-out back to where your car is parked. \nDirections and exact start location will be provided when you sign up. \nHistory\nPeople have lived along Ocklawaha for over 15\,000 years. Evidence of their passing can be seen on all stretches of the river. Even though all sections were occupied in all time periods\, certain stretches of the river seem to have a much more obvious connection to specific tribes or cultures. In the lower river\, certain features tend to keep us mindful of the Archaic Period cultures\, while the upper river is palpably the realm of the Acuera. The section we’ll be exploring on this trip is all about the Seminoles. Several important historical sites and some fascinating stories – including some in our own time – give this part of Ocklawaha a powerful Seminole identity. \nDifficulty\nThis is an easy paddle on slow\, tannin-stained waters. As we advocate for a breach of the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam\, join us for a rare opportunity to witness the impacts of the dam and imagine the possibilities of a reunited riverway. \nEach day experienced captains and advocates\, Karen Chadwick and Eirka Ritter\, will be taking two different routes to explore the area: the Kenwood Route and the Eureka Route. Cleanup bags\, gloves and grabbers will be provided. \nUseful Items to Bring:\n\nFULL reusable water bottle\nClosed-toe shoes (Required. We HIGHLY recommend wearing rain boots! DESCRIPTION:VOG Creation Workshop | Saturday\, October 18 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Jacksonville University Marine Science Research Institute Building\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER\, CCA Florida and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University have teamed up to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) Program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments. \nEvent Details\nWe are hosting an assembly workshop to build a third batch of VOGs for local residents. There will be stations to punch holes in the recycled oyster shells\, string them on the rope\, and tie them.
