SUMMARY:Florida Climate Week
DESCRIPTION:Florida Climate Week (Jacksonville) | October 5-11\, 2026\nNow in its sixth year\, Florida Climate Week is a powerful celebration of engagement\, education\, and collective action focused on climate and resilience challenges facing our state. \n© April Visuals\, LLC \nMonday\, October 5\nTrout River Boat Excursion | Monday\, October 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. | Jacksonville University – MSRI Boat Ramp\nJoin St. Johns Riverkeeper\, Riverview Collective Community Organization (RCCO) and COJ Sustainability Department during Florida Climate Week sponsored by the VOLO Foundation as we explore the Trout River and discuss opportunities for access\, water quality and infrastructure improvements. \nPlease arrive at the dock near Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute (MSRI) by 5:15 pm so we can board\, receive the safety instructions\, and be on our way! \nReserve your spot here. \nTuesday\, October 6\nUNFILTERED – The Truth About Oysters: Film Screening & Panel | Tuesday\, October 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. | Highlands Regional Library\nThis Emmy award-winning documentary reveals the oyster’s hidden double life. On our plates\, they’re a delicacy and a livelihood. Beneath the surface\, they’re one of nature’s most powerful tools — a keystone species that filters and cleans vast volumes of water\, buffers shorelines from storms\, and anchors entire estuary ecosystems. \nBut the reefs are vanishing. Ninety percent of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed in the last thirty years\, and Florida’s own Apalachicola Bay is slipping toward the same fate under the pressures of pollution\, coastal development\, and overharvesting. The film makes a hopeful case: shell recycling\, artificial reefs\, and freshwater management can still turn the tide. \nThat work is already underway right here in Jacksonville. Along the Ribault\, Trout\, and St. Johns Rivers\, we’re putting these same nature-based solutions into practice — building Pervious Oyster Shell Habitat (POSH) modules and Vertical Oyster Gardens to restore living shorelines\, and helping launch a recycled oyster shell collection system that gives discarded shells a second life as new reef. Every oyster we return to the water is another filter cleaning the St. Johns. \nAfter the film: Stay for a conversation with local panelists who are harnessing the power of oysters to restore and filter the St. Johns River — and learn how you can get involved. \nRSVP here to reserve your spot! \nFriday\, October 9\nCity In A Forest: Film Screening & Panel | Friday\, October 9 from 6-9 p.m. | The Jessie Ball DuPont Center\nAtlanta calls itself the “City in a Forest\,” but its tree canopy is under pressure from rapid development. City in a Forest is a documentary that follows the people working to protect that urban forest and asks what it takes to keep a growing city green. \nRSVP here to reserve your spot! \nSaturday\, October 10\nPOSH Module Workshop | Saturday\, October 10 from 9 a.m. – Noon | Jacksonville University Marine Science Research Institute\nJoin SJRK\, Jax Oyster Conservation\, and RCCO for a POSH Module Workshop! We will talk about the many benefits of oysters to our estuaries\, how oyster reefs make us more resilient to the effects of climate change\, the many ways we can restore oyster reefs\, and the benefits of using Pervious Oyster Shell Habitats (POSH). \nWe will then construct POSH units by mixing recycled oyster shell\, cement\, and water into cement mixers and pouring the mixture into molds to cure\, before they are deployed in spring. \nLearn more and RSVP here. \n

SUMMARY:UNFILTERED - The Truth About Oysters: Florida Climate Week Screening & Panel
DESCRIPTION:UNFILTERED – The Truth About Oysters: Florida Climate Week Screening & Panel | Tuesday\, October 6 | 5:30-7:30 | Highlands Regional Library (1826 Dunn Avenue)\nHosted by COJ Sustainability Department – St. Johns Riverkeeper – Jax Oyster Conservation \nYou’ll never look at an oyster the same way again. \nThis Emmy award-winning documentary reveals the oyster’s hidden double life. Johns. \nRSVP\nThis event is free\, but reserve your spot here. \nAfter the Film: Panel Discussion\nStay for a conversation with local panelists who are harnessing the power of oysters to restore and filter the St. Johns River – and learn how you can get involved. The filmmaker will be in attendance\, and East Coast Oysters will have oysters available for sale. \nMeet the panelists: \nJosh McLawhorn: Director/Editor of UNFILTERED\nUnfiltered: The Truth About Oysters is Josh’s debut feature-length documentary. A member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences\, Josh’s work as a cinematographer and editor has earned eight Suncoast Emmy Awards. He operates Level Up Digital Media\, a firm which produces commercials\, corporate and nonprofit films\, and television programs. \nJosh’s 2014 short film Almost Ready won first place nationwide in Nikon’s Everyday Cinema Contest\, and his commercial work has earned several Gold Addy Awards at the Tallahassee chapter of the American Advertising Federation\, including a Judge’s Choice Award in 2016\, and an FPRA Image Award in 2019. \nThe topics addressed in Unfiltered: The Truth About Oysters are close to home for the inhabitants of coastal communities around the world\, and Josh is no exception. A native of Florida’s panhandle\, he grew up eating oysters harvested from the Apalachicola Bay estuary and swimming in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. He hopes Unfiltered: The Truth About Oysters will attract public and political interest to the ecological crisis facing oysters\, and help supercharge reef restoration efforts. \nLearn more about Josh at levelup.media. \nChucha Barber: Executive Producer of UNFILTERED\nA member in good standing with the Producers Guild of America\, filmmaker Chucha Barber has been creating documentary films for more than 30 years on topics as diverse as art\, paleontology\, high-profile murders and auto racing. She has produced more than 29 documentaries in partnership with network-owned stations including NBC\, CBS\, ABC\, Univision and Telemundo. \nPast chair and founder of the Tallahassee Film Festival\, Chucha owns and operates Chucha Barber Productions\, which creates television programs and documentary films. Chucha’s work as a producer has earned seven Suncoast Emmy Awards\, a Girl Scouts of America Women of Distinction Award\, and two Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media. \nChucha’s influence and interest extends beyond filmmaking. Appointed by a former Florida governor as a Commissioner of Volunteer Florida\, Chucha is a past chair of the Volunteer Florida Foundation. She has served as a board member of the Leon County Tourist Development Council\, instructed students as a guest lecturer at Florida State University\, co-chaired the Tallahassee Heart Ball\, and founded the Florida Wine Festival. \nIn addition to Unfiltered: The Truth About Oysters\, she is currently working on her first television series and a documentary about the current and historical significance of Black churches to societal change. \nLearn more about Chucha Barber Productions at www.chuchabarber.com. \nHunter Mathews: Founder and Director for Jax Oyster Conservation\nHunter was born and raised in Jacksonville\, Florida. Growing up\, his love for Florida’s beaches\, springs\, and waterways sparked a passion for Florida’s ecosystems and conservation. He received his master’s degree in biology from the University of North Florida\, where he focused on oyster reef restoration ecology\, leading the first biological studies of a novel oyster reef restoration method\, Pervious Oyster Shell Habitats (or POSH). Hunter founded Jax Oyster Conservation in 2024\, motivated to provide an on-going oyster shell recycling program for local restaurants\, citizens\, and events\, to reduce our landfill contribution and provide oyster shell to supply more coastal restoration and resilience projects in northeast Florida. \nKevonne Phillips: Eastcoast Oysters\nKevonne Phillips is a well-known Florida oyster Shucker\, now residing and servicing Jacksonville and surrounding areas with his own mobile raw bar called Eastcoast Oysters. Kevonne has over 10 years catering experience\, with a rich history of high-end events such as Formula 1\, Miami Oyster Fest\, Welcome to Rockville\, Hulaween\, Ritz-Carlton private parties\, with weddings\, holiday gatherings\, and local vending in between. \nDavid Wandel: Episcopal AP Environmental Science Faculty Member\nDavid Wandel embodies a combination of environmental stewardship and education. For 14 years\, David has dedicated his professional career to environmental education at The Episcopal School of Jacksonville\, helping young people understand not only how natural systems function\, but why protecting those systems matters. Outside of the classroom\, he has transformed those same principles into direct environmental action through oyster restoration and\, most recently\, the development of Matanzas Oyster Company\, a sustainable oyster aquaculture operation with its first harvest anticipated in spring 2027. \n \nDavid holds a degree in biology from Penn State University and has pursued specialized training in oyster aquaculture through the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. His interest in oysters extends far beyond their commercial value. At the center of his work is a genuine fascination with the oyster as an ecosystem engineer and a desire to help others understand the extraordinary role oysters can play in the health and resilience of coastal ecosystems. \nThrough sustainable oyster aquaculture\, David is demonstrating how responsible food production and environmental stewardship can coexist. Although the farm’s first commercial harvest is anticipated in spring 2027\, its foundation has been built on years of education\, specialized training\, community partnership\, and direct participation in oyster habitat restoration. \nDavid’s work demonstrates that meaningful environmental protection does not have to occur in only one setting. It can happen in a classroom\, along the shoreline of the St. Johns River\, in the leased water column of the Guana River\, through community restoration projects\, and through environmentally responsible local businesses. His career and community service reflect a sustained commitment to protecting Northeast Florida’s waterways while inspiring others to understand and value the ecosystems around them. \nTrey Ford: Strategic Partnerships & Programming Coordinator for St. Johns Riverkeeper\n\nTrey leads the Resilient Ribault Initiative in Northside and Westside Jacksonville. He coordinates the organization’s oyster restoration and living shoreline work in the Ribault\, Moncrief\, and Trout River watersheds\, including a Vertical Oyster Garden program with more than 300 gardens installed on residential docks and the Pervious Oyster Shell Habitat reef modules at the Riverview Park living shoreline — work carried out with Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute\, CCA Florida\, and the Riverview Collective Community Organization. He is also an elected Supervisor on the Duval Soil & Water Conservation District and the founder of Florida Fish Pepper Co. — Growers Alliance. A film producer and programmer\, Trey is interested in how oysters connect water quality\, working waterfronts\, foodways\, and the Gullah Geechee cultural history of this coast.

SUMMARY:City In A Forest: Florida Climate Week Screening & Panel
DESCRIPTION:City In A Forest: Florida Climate Week Screening & Panel | Friday\, October 9 | 6-9 p.m. | The Jessie Ball DuPont Center (40 E Adams St)\nA Florida Climate Week event presented by St. Johns Riverkeeper’s Resilient Ribault Initiative | Hosted by COJ Sustainability Department – St. Johns Riverkeeper – Groundwork Jax – Greenscape of Jax \nAtlanta calls itself the “City in a Forest\,” but its tree canopy is under pressure from rapid development. City in a Forest is a documentary that follows the people working to protect that urban forest and asks what it takes to keep a growing city green. \nJacksonville faces the same questions. Trees cool our neighborhoods during extreme heat\, soak up stormwater before it floods our streets\, and filter runoff before it reaches the Ribault\, Trout\, and St. Johns Rivers. But canopy isn’t shared equally. Many Northside and Westside neighborhoods have less shade and more pavement\, so they carry more of the heat and flooding burden. \nRSVP\nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is appreciated so we can plan seating. \nAfter the Screening: Panel Discussion\nStay for a community panel on what urban forests mean for climate resilience\, public health\, and environmental justice here at home. Panelists will also share how residents can help protect and grow Jacksonville’s canopy. \nKrystle Chanel\nKrystle Chanel is an Atlanta-based artist and social practitioner whose work bridges art\, community health\, and social impact. Through photography and film\, she engages communities to explore how the social determinants of health\, as well as the natural and built environment\, shape daily life. Her layered visual narratives highlight neighborhood strengths\, environmental concerns\, and community stories. \nTrey Ford: Strategic Partnerships & Programming Coordinator for St. Johns Riverkeeper\nTrey leads the Resilient Ribault Initiative — a place-based resilience program in Northside and Westside Jacksonville that connects tree canopy\, park access\, stormwater\, and water quality to the neighborhoods living with those conditions every day. He is also an elected Supervisor on the Duval Soil & Water Conservation District and the founder of Florida Fish Pepper Co. — Growers Alliance\, a trade association reviving the heirloom fish pepper across the Southeast. His work sits at the intersection of urban land\, food systems\, and environmental justice\, with partners ranging from neighborhood associations and grassroots organizations to city agencies\, universities\, and national funders. A film producer and programmer as well\, Trey uses documentary and cultural programming to bring conservation conversations to audiences who have too often been left out of them. \nNicole Kresse: Executive Director for Greenscape of Jacksonville\nNicole Kresse serves as Executive Director of Greenscape of Jacksonville\, Florida’s oldest urban forestry nonprofit. With more than 18 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit and international development sectors\, Nicole brings a strategic yet hands-on approach to advancing Greenscape’s mission of protecting and expanding Jacksonville’s tree canopy. A passionate environmental advocate\, Nicole is committed to deepening community engagement\, growing impactful partnerships\, and enhancing urban resilience through trees. Prior to joining Greenscape\, Nicole managed over $500 million in U.S. foreign assistance with USAID programs and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer\, with a focus on sustainable development and volunteer-driven initiatives. With a clear mission to Plant\, Protect\, and Promote trees\, Greenscape is growing a lasting legacy with more than 356\,900 trees planted or distributed in the region. \nGloria McNair: Chief Community Officer for Groundwork Jacksonville\nGloria McNair joined GW Jax in 2018 and leads the organization’s community outreach efforts. Gloria is responsible for engaging citizens in visioning and advocating for their community\, helping to ensure residents have input in shaping GW Jax projects including McCoys Creek\, Hogans Creek and the Emerald Trail. \nOne of Gloria’s major areas of focus is to help long-time residents stay in their homes and benefit from the prosperity the Emerald Trail will create. \nGloria’s professional career has been diverse\, yet at the core of her work has been a dedication to service.  She joined the U.S. Navy and served 22 years of active service\, first as a Hospital Corpsman and then as an Environmental Health Officer. After retiring in Jacksonville\, she used her skills as an educator and preventive health advocate with the Florida Department of Health in Duval to support initiatives including Groundwork Jacksonville. \nGloria has a MA in Human Resource Development from Webster University\, a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Excelsior and an Associates of Science degree in Environmental Health from Merritt College. Originally from South Carolina\, Gloria now proudly claims Jacksonville as home for her and her husband and two daughters.

SUMMARY:Paddle the Ocklawaha
DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Ocklawaha with Adventure Outpost | Saturday\, October 10 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Ocklawaha River (Palatka)\nJoin us for a 3.5 hour paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport. Also on this site is Davenport Mound\, an ancient Indian burial site first excavated in the 1800’s. \nPrice\nTour & Kayak Rental: $65 \nBring Your Own Kayak/Board: $50 \nRegister\nTo register to join us\, please email Adventure Outpost at riverguide2000@yahoo.com. Mention the date (October 10) and St. Johns Riverkeeper. (Phone currently out of order but email to reserve your spot and get instructions to pay.
