SUMMARY:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop with CCA Florida & Jacksonville University MSRI
DESCRIPTION:CCA Florida is teaming up with St. Johns RIVERKEEPER and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments. The first step is an assembly workshop to build the first batch of VOGs. \nRegister\nPlease RSVP here. This workshop is limited to the first 40 volunteers that sign up.

SUMMARY:Henry Klutho Park Cleanup with With Love\, Jax
DESCRIPTION:Henry Klutho Park Cleanup with With Love\, Jax | Friday\, September 13\, 2024 from 1-3 p.m. at Henry Klutho Park\nHelp With Love\, Jax clean up Henry Klutho Park before their Dare to D.I.S.C. charity disc golf tournament! This scenic park just off Hogan’s Creek in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville was named in honor of famed architect Henry J. Klutho. \nPark History\nThe Hogans Creek Improvement Project of 1929-30\, designed by architect Henry Klutho (1873-1964) and engineered by Charles Imeson\, turned much of the park grounds into a lovely Venetian-style promenade. The City renamed a portion of Springfield Park in 1984 to honor Mr. Klutho\, a Springfield resident whose high-rise buildings in downtown and Prairie School of architecture transformed Jacksonville after the Great Fire of 1901. \nRegister\nPlease register in advance so we can get an idea of how many volunteers to expect\, and to receive any event updates.

Conservation is at the heart of what we do\, and we recognize that we do this work for the American people–both the present generation who benefit today and future generations who will inherit our legacy of conserving America’s aquatic resources. \nWelaka National Fish Hatchery is charged with producing Atlantic Striped Bass for the St. Johns River in order to maintain the population for ecological\, historical and economic purposes. The hatchery also works with Gulf Coast states to produce and protect Gulf of Mexico Striped Bass from Florida to Georgia and Alabama. Recently\, the hatchery has begun work with two federally listed species\, the federally threatened Eastern Indigo Snake and the federally endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow. \nRegister\nRegistration is required. A $15 donation to St. Johns Riverkeeper is requested to help cover expenses. Capacity is limited\, so be sure to reserve your spot early! \nBecome a Member of St. Johns Riverkeeper\nThis is a members-only event. If you are not a member of St. Johns Riverkeeper\, you can become one here! Help us continue our mission to defend the St. Johns River and advocate for its protection.

SUMMARY:Wetland Preserve Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore further up the watershed at Wetland Preserve in Palatka! \nWe will be led by Wetland Preserve educators on a guided\, open-air vehicle (aka\, buggy!) tour of their conservation lands as we learn about the key role these forests and swamps play in improving our water quality. Following the tour participants are welcome to remain\, have lunch\, and explore the natural beauty of the area. \nAbout Wetland Preserve\nWetland Preserve’s primary parcel consists of 3\,800 acres\, all of which is protected by a Florida Forever conservation easement and also falls within the O2O wildlife corridor. \nWetland Preserve is adjacent to the Rice Creek Conservation Area\, a 5000 acre project of the Saint Johns River Water Management District located in Putnam County\, Florida. On the southern border is Nine Mile Swamp Park\, a 1268 acre conservation project owned by Putnam County. Most of the land falls under what is considered a “mesic flatwoods” ecosystem designation\, with a fair portion of it being mature creek swamps and a smaller area consisting of dry sand hills. \nCheck out the tour section of their website to learn more: http://benandlouann.com/coming-for-a-tour/ \nCost: $15.00 per person \nWhat to Bring\nReusable water bottle\nSnacks\nBug repellent\nBug bite ointment (just in case the bug repellent fails you!)\nSunscreen / lip balm\nCamera\nBinoculars\nAny medical items you may need while out such as an EpiPen or diabetic supplies \nWhat to Wear\nLong sleeved T-shirt. Long sleeved is important because it gives you extra protection against biting insects and an extra barrier to protect you in case you inadvertently bump up against some poison ivy or other irritating plant.\nLong pants – blue jeans or hiking pants\nTall socks that you can tuck your pants into (for tick protection)\nHat\nSunglasses\nClosed-toe shoes \nREGISTER   (Spaces are limited)
