We will have grabbers\, gloves and garbage bags ready for the event. \nDepending on the turnout\, we may take a trip down to the Marina and see if we can find more trash by the water. If you would like to turn back early\, please leave your equipment back where we started the event. \nPrior to the event\, we will take a group photo. After we have all returned\, we will bag the trash and weigh it for the day’s total haul. \nJoin us afterwards as we grab lunch at one of the many local restaurants in walking distance. What better way to explore the St. Johns during the high heat of the summer than by immersing yourself in a book. \nAfter a hurricane strikes a small Florida town\, young Claire is never the same. Years later\, her brother Gunther is still haunted by the suspicion that she was taken and replaced by something not quite human. Set in the wild landscapes of northern Florida and Western Appalachia\, this eco-fiction (cli-fi) story is a lyrical\, genre-blurring novel about loss\, identity\, and the hidden intelligence that pulses beneath our feet. Nature and technology dissolve into one\, reshaping what it means to be human. \nAbout the Author\nSarah Clarke Stuart is a Professor of English at FSCJ where she teaches literature\, film\, composition\, and emerging technologies. On our plates\, they’re a delicacy and a livelihood. Beneath the surface\, they’re one of nature’s most powerful tools — a keystone species that filters and cleans vast volumes of water\, buffers shorelines from storms\, and anchors entire estuary ecosystems. \nBut the reefs are vanishing. Ninety percent of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed in the last thirty years\, and Florida’s own Apalachicola Bay is slipping toward the same fate under the pressures of pollution\, coastal development\, and overharvesting. The film makes a hopeful case: shell recycling\, artificial reefs\, and freshwater management can still turn the tide. \nThat work is already underway right here in Jacksonville. DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Ocklawaha with Adventure Outpost | Saturday\, October 10 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Ocklawaha River (Palatka)\nJoin us for a 3.5 hour paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport.
