We will have grabbers\, gloves and garbage bags ready for the event. \nDepending on the turnout\, we may take a trip down to the Marina and see if we can find more trash by the water. If you would like to turn back early\, please leave your equipment back where we started the event. \nPrior to the event\, we will take a group photo. After we have all returned\, we will bag the trash and weigh it for the day’s total haul. \nJoin us afterwards as we grab lunch at one of the many local restaurants in walking distance. Whether you’ve read the book or not\, you’ll enjoy this discussion about the places and inspirations behind Stuart’s book\, Song of the Unsung Mushroom\, which is set along the St. Johns River. What better way to explore the St. Johns during the high heat of the summer than by immersing yourself in a book. \nAfter a hurricane strikes a small Florida town\, young Claire is never the same. Years later\, her brother Gunther is still haunted by the suspicion that she was taken and replaced by something not quite human. Set in the wild landscapes of northern Florida and Western Appalachia\, this eco-fiction (cli-fi) story is a lyrical\, genre-blurring novel about loss\, identity\, and the hidden intelligence that pulses beneath our feet. Nature and technology dissolve into one\, reshaping what it means to be human. \nAbout the Author\nSarah Clarke Stuart is a Professor of English at FSCJ where she teaches literature\, film\, composition\, and emerging technologies. Stuart has published various nonfiction works\, and Song of the Unsung Mushroom\, her debut novel\, is a coming-of-age science fiction story set in Jacksonville\, Florida. She contributed for many years to First Coast Magazine and Flamingo Magazine with articles grounded in a curious appreciation for the natural landscapes and stories of the region. This is part of an ongoing effort to improve and maintain this important community resource connecting locals to our river on Jacksonville’s northside. \nVolunteers can expect to collect litter\, clear trails\, catalog and/or remove invasive plants\, and more as needed! Cleanup bags\, gloves and grabbers will be provided. \nUseful Items to Bring:\n\nFULL reusable water bottle\nClosed-toe shoes (Required. We HIGHLY recommend wearing rain boots! This park is prone to flooding and general sogginess.)\nSun protection (sunscreen\, hat\, sunglasses)\nBug spray\nWork/gardening gloves (cleanup gloves will be provided)\nSmall garden tools (trowels\, shovels\, etc.)\n\nRegister\nPlease register to let us know you’ll be joining us so we can plan accordingly. \nSafety Precautions\n\nEveryone must register/sign a liability waiver to participate.\nAn adult must accompany youth under 18 years of age.\nStay together and work in teams of at least two people.\nWatch your footing\, avoid steep embankments\, and use caution when walking through tall grass or brush.\nDo not use your bare hands to pick up broken glass or sharp items. Trash grabbers will be available.\nLeave hazardous items\, such as syringes or dead animals\, in place and notify the Site Captain.\nDo not try to pick up items too heavy for you to lift. When in doubt\, seek help.\nRespect wildlife and keep your distance.\nTake breaks as needed\, protect yourself from the sun\, and drink plenty of water.\nMake sure trash bags are not too full to close and secure.\nKeep tires separate from the trash bags.\n\nResilient Ribault\nThe Resilient Ribault initiative is a community-driven effort led by St. Johns Riverkeeper & LISC Jacksonville to protect and restore the Ribault River and the neighborhoods that call it home.
