SUMMARY:River Rising: Brewing Up Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 11 | 6 p.m. | Intuition Ale Works\nIt is critical that we all do our part now to tackle climate change to protect our waterways and the future of Northeast Florida. This month\, we will explore how natural solutions and green infrastructure play a major role in protecting our river and its tributaries while making Jacksonville more resilient to rising waters and climate change. \nGroundwork Jacksonville’s Dylan Ford and HALFF’s Kyle Schare will be our experts discussing how creek restoration and smart landscape design improve our quality of life while protecting our community and our river for future generations. \nCome for a pint and for meaningful conversation on how we can all be part of the solution. Rising Tides\, St. Johns Riverkeeper’s young professionals group\, will be in attendance and meeting prior to the event! \nThis is part of our 2023 series of brewery conversations exploring solutions to climate change\, sea level rise\, and the pollution problems threatening the health of our river and our communities. Brought to you by St. Johns Riverkeeper’s Water Policy Group. \nRegister\nRSVP and let us know you’re coming. \nMeet the Panel\nDylan Ford: Landscape Architect/Project Manager at Groundwork Jacksonville \nDylan Ford is Groundwork Jacksonville’s Landscape Architect and Project Manager\, responsible for designing native landscapes for the Emerald Trail\, as well as managing watershed and restoration projects for McCoys Creek and Hogans Creek. Dylan is committed to improving the quality of life in Jacksonville through green infrastructure design. \nBorn in California\, Dylan spent most of his life in Indiana. He earned a master’s in landscape architecture from Ball State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics from Manchester University in Indiana. \nWanting to be close to family and the beach\, Dylan and his wife Holly moved to Jacksonville in 2018. Prior to joining Groundwork\, Dylan worked for the State of Florida as Engineering Specialist II for the Army National Guard in Saint Augustine\, Fla. Currently\, Dylan is pursuing his Landscape Architect license in Florida\, as well as the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) designation. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). \nKyle Schare: HALFF \nKyle Schare\, EIT is experienced in the design of stormwater and utility infrastructure\, and site development for commercial and residential projects. He currently focuses on hydrology and hydraulic modeling of master drainage and regional flood planning projects in Florida and Texas. Kyle is also involved in the stabilization and restoration of creeks in the Jacksonville area. He applies his education from the Georgia Institute of Technology to bring project ideas to life and improve communities. \nKyle is a lifelong Jacksonville resident and loves to fish and kayak on the St. Johns River. He has a keen interest in pursuing projects and a career that will improve Jacksonville and leave a positive impact for generations to come. \nRiver Rising: Why it Matters\nRising sea levels are making storm surge events worse\, causing more septic tanks to fail\, undermining infrastructure\, pushing saltwater further upstream\, and threatening the health of our river and our communities. \nNow is the time to ensure that the St. Johns River is resilient and healthy enough to withstand more frequent shocks to its system and for all of us to address the underlying causes of climate change.

SUMMARY:Take Action to Fight Climate Change: Renew Jax Info Meeting
DESCRIPTION:JEA is the largest community owned utility in Florida and the largest source of carbon emissions in Northeast Florida. Renewable energy sources only represented 1.3% of JEA’s energy portfolio in 2021\, with only 0.64% produced by solar. \nAs a result\, Sierra Club’s Northeast Florida group has launched the Renew Jax campaign to encourage JEA and the City of Jacksonville to commit to 100% renewable energy\, such as solar\, by 2050. Twelve other Florida cities have already committed to exclusively using renewable energy on or before 2050\, and we can too! St. Johns RIVERKEEPER has joined with Sierra Club as a campaign partner. \nRegister\nRegister to receive the Zoom link to join Sierra Club of Northeast Florida and St. Johns RIVERKEEPER to learn more about the Renew Jax Campaign on Thursday\, January 19 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
