SUMMARY:VOG Creation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:VOG Creation Workshop | Saturday\, October 18 from 9 a.m. – Noon at the Jacksonville University Marine Science Research Institute Building\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER\, CCA Florida and the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University have teamed up to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) Program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. The goal is to distribute hundreds of VOGs throughout the Jacksonville area to improve water quality and create new oyster habitats. The Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University will be incorporating a research aspect into this project with plans to monitor the VOGs following the deployments. \nEvent Details\nWe are hosting an assembly workshop to build a third batch of VOGs for local residents. There will be stations to punch holes in the recycled oyster shells\, string them on the rope\, and tie them. Bring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid. \nRegister\nRegister here to volunteer! The team will share their findings to date from the expedition\, and discuss what we can do to restore the St. Johns’ submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) with panelists who have worked closely with this issue. \nSchedule\nCasual Meet & Greet: 5:30 p.m.\nSAV Talk: 6-7 p.m. \nPanelists\nErich Marzolf | St. Johns River Water Management District\nErich Marzolf is the Director of the Division of Water Resources with the St. Johns River Water Management District. He oversees the District’s aquatic restoration and data collection programs. Erich earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California Davis where he studied subalpine lake ecology. Prior to joining the District in 1994 Erich was a scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Erich has served on the boards of the Florida Lake Management Society and the North American Lake Management Society. \nRobert A. Mattson | Retired\, St. Johns River Water Management District\nRob Mattson is retired after a 35-year career working for two of Florida’s Water Management Districts: as Biologist with the Suwannee River Water Management District (1988-2005) and Sr. Environmental Scientist with the St. Johns River Water Management District (2005-2022). Before that he worked for a small environmental consulting firm in the Tampa Bay area (1983-1988). Rob has a B.A. in Biology and M.S. in Zoology from the University of South Florida. He was certified as an Environmental Professional by the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals and as a Certified Senior Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America. In 2022\, Rob was honored by the Florida Lake Management Society with the Marjorie Carr Award\, their highest award given for a lifetime of achievement in the management and protection of Florida’s aquatic resources.

Prior to joining the City of Jacksonville\, Anne served as the Coastal Resilience Manager for the City of New Orleans where she implemented nature-based solutions to sea-level risk and coastal land loss. Anne’s previous experience also includes serving at the White House Council on Environmental Quality\, where she participated in the development of climate adaptation and resilience policies to meet the Obama Administration’s resilience goals.

He is also a local tournament angler. \nTim has taken a special interest in the river through noticing a decline in its habitat and health. He serves on the board of the Mighty River Recovery\, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving fish and wildlife habitat on Florida’s St. Johns River\, while working to organize and unify outdoor enthusiasts. \nTim was instrumental in the SAV protective enclosure initiative set forth by Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC). Tim was the lead organizer in recruiting volunteers to install these SAV protective enclosures in the St. Johns in an attempt to bring back this vital habitat.

After becoming a licensed attorney\, Lomberk served as the Staff Attorney for Alachua Conservation Trust and the Director of Special Projects for the University of Florida Levin College of Law Conservation Clinic\, focusing on the use of conservation easements to protect sea turtle nesting habitat. Join us for monthly roundtable discussions that highlight various parts of our vibrant river\, adjacent watersheds\, and key figures along our journey. \nFuture locations for this series will include Sanford\, Palatka\, St. Augustine\, Jacksonville\, and Mayport. \nLaunch Date: June 26\, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. at Walking Tree Brewery (3209 Dodger Road\, Vero Beach) – Register Here\nTopic: Grove Land Reservoir – Risks to the St. Johns and the Indian River Lagoon (IRL)\nOn June 12\, the Governor signed his budget that included a last-minute maneuver that appropriates $400 million dollars to the SJRWMD to acquire\, permit and construct the Grove Land Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area\, which will flood the Upper St. Johns River with polluted water from South Florida. \nAs currently designed\, Grove Land will deliver the majority of water to the St. Johns River basin when the river is already high. The additional water would either cause downstream flooding in the St. Johns or would require discharge to the IRL via the C-54 canal. They are actively conserving a 3\,725-acre area in northeast Florida so diverse it encompasses forests\, flatwoods\, sandhill and swamps\, and borders Rice Creek. They have lived on the eastbank of the St. Johns just south of Julington Creek for nearly 35 years. Ben and LouAnne were the 2021 Jon Gould Florida Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year. \nThe Williams have taken on many roles as Florida land stewards. They work cooperatively with the FWC’s Landowner Assistance Program on conserving native wildlife and habitat\, and helped pioneer the first landowner-led prescribed burn association in the state. Along with being founding members of St. Johns Riverkeeper\, they belong to the FWC’s local Black Bear Stakeholder Group\, and offer recreation opportunities to wounded veterans through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Operations Outdoor Freedom. They also use best management practices as a Stewardship Forest under the Florida Forest Service.

Some of her key responsibilities are monitoring the health of the St. Johns River\, evaluating and prioritizing issues and emerging threats\, and advocating for actions to improve and protect the river’s health and expanding relationships with watershed stakeholders. \nBefore starting her role at St. Johns Riverkeeper\, Soraya worked at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a wetlands evaluator/inspector and a stormwater management inspector. She also worked as a biologist at a private environmental company with a variety of job functions\, including wetland delineations and reviews with jurisdictional agencies\, wildlife assessments\, invasive plant control\, and tree surveys. \nZoë Tressel  \nZoë Tressel (pictured left) is currently a member of St. Johns Riverkeeper’s advocacy team\, starting as an intern in February of 2023. She is currently seeking dual masters degrees in Marine Science and Public Policy at Jacksonville University\, with a prospective graduation date of April\, 2024.  \nZoe also works part-time as a biological scientist for Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. She is passionate about creating informed\, science-driven policy that will ultimately serve to provide safer\, cleaner\, and more accessible environmental systems throughout important watersheds like the St. Johns River.

Dylan is committed to improving the quality of life in Jacksonville through green infrastructure design. \nBorn in California\, Dylan spent most of his life in Indiana. He earned a master’s in landscape architecture from Ball State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics from Manchester University in Indiana. \nWanting to be close to family and the beach\, Dylan and his wife Holly moved to Jacksonville in 2018. Prior to joining Groundwork\, Dylan worked for the State of Florida as Engineering Specialist II for the Army National Guard in Saint Augustine\, Fla. Currently\, Dylan is pursuing his Landscape Architect license in Florida\, as well as the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) designation. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). \nKyle Schare: HALFF \nKyle Schare\, EIT is experienced in the design of stormwater and utility infrastructure\, and site development for commercial and residential projects. He currently focuses on hydrology and hydraulic modeling of master drainage and regional flood planning projects in Florida and Texas. Kyle is also involved in the stabilization and restoration of creeks in the Jacksonville area. He applies his education from the Georgia Institute of Technology to bring project ideas to life and improve communities. \nKyle is a lifelong Jacksonville resident and loves to fish and kayak on the St. Johns River. DESCRIPTION:Climate Conversations: From the Sea to the St. Johns\nSaturday\, April 22 from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center\nJoin The Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience at Stetson University\, St. Johns Riverkeeper\, League of Women Voters of Volusia County\, and East Central Florida Regional Resilience Collaborative on Earth Day as local experts explore our future in a changing climate\, and our region’s resilience to flooding and sea level rise. Following this engaging panel discussion\, the Sandra Stetson Aquatic Center will reveal a new mural on-site. \nOur esteemed panelists\, Jason Evans\, Assoc. Prof. of Environmental Science and Studies\, Stetson University; Lisa Rinaman\, St. Johns Riverkeeper; Jenifer Rupert\, Resilience Officer\, East Central Florida Regional Planning Council and Audrey Berlie\, Research Assistant at Stetson’s IWER will discuss our most recent challenges due to sea level rise and river flooding\, resiliency planning\, and comparative and practical solutions for our communities. RSVP for the concert and let us know you’re coming! \nLocation\nDirections to Jacksonville University Riverfront Amphitheater: Enter the University through the main gate from the roundabout at University and Merrill. Continue straight\, down the hill\, until you come to a parking lot. This is a great place to park\, as the Dolphin Green and Amphitheater are right there on the St. Johns River. View the campus map (search for “Amphitheater”). \nAbout the Band\nSnake Blood Remedy is a traditional country music and Old Time band. Playing a variety of classic songs from 1800 to 1970\, along with original compositions from singer\, songwriter and founder JD Cook. The band began around 2013 with original members JD Cook and Mitch Holstein (washboard)\, soon being joined by John Paul Jackson (bass). With numerous players coming and going through the years eventually a solid lineup formed around 2017 with the addition of Micky Lynn\, and Andre and Abigail Gruber on banjo\, lead guitar and fiddle.
