SUMMARY:Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell
DESCRIPTION:Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell Presented by the Jacksonville Public Library in partnership with St. Johns Riverkeeper and the Jacksonville Climate Coalition\nSaturday\, May 18 at 2 p.m. | Downtown Main Library (303 N Laura St.)\nJoin St. Johns Riverkeeper and Jacksonville Climate Coalition in partnership with the Jacksonville Public Library for a Lit Chat with Jeff Goodell\, award-winning author of The Heat Will Kill You First. This Lit Chat Interview is a 60-minute program consisting of a 40-minute conversation between author Jeff Goodell and interviewer Nikesha Elise Williams followed by 20 minutes of audience Q&A. A book signing will follow\, with books available for sale on site. \nFrom 1:30-2 p.m. and after the Lit Chat\, nonprofits and experts will be on hand with information about solutions to climate change and heat. \nRegister here through the Jacksonville Public Library. If that doesn’t work\, you can call 255-BOOK to reset the PIN. \nFrom the author’s website: “An explosive\, completely new understanding of heat\, the lethal force which threatens every living cell on Earth. New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Goodell presents a deeply-reported examination of the impact that temperature rise will have on our lives and on our planet\, offering a vital new perspective on where we are headed\, how we can prepare\, and what is at stake if we fail to act.” \nAs the planet warms\, all our assumptions are going to be upended…The Heat Will Kill You First is essential reading for anyone who cares about the future. – Elizabeth Kolbert\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sixth Extinction \nThe climate crisis brings no greater threat than the prospect of deadly extreme heat…Jeff Goodell brings a mix of fantastic storytelling\, lucid scientific communication\, and eternal optimism in detailing the profound threat we face with the climate crisis and what we can still do about it. – Michael E. Mann\, author of The New Climate War \n30 million: Number of people who live in extreme heat today (above 85 degrees mean annual temperature) \n2 billion: Number of people who are likely to live in extreme heat in 2070 \n250\,000: Annual worldwide deaths from firearms \n489\,000: Annual worldwide deaths from extreme heat \nExtreme heat is the number-one weather-related cause of death in the U.S.\, killing more people most years than hurricanes\, floods and tornadoes combined. \nStudies show that children don’t learn as well\, more crime occurs\, suicide rates rise\, workers are less productive\, and health problems worsen when it is really hot. \nHeat also puts an unequal burden on more vulnerable populations\, such as older and lower-income people\, outdoor workers\, and prisoners. \nRegister\nRegister here through the Jacksonville Public Library. You must have a current (free) library card to register. \nIf you already have a library card\, you’ll need your PIN to register – if you haven’t changed your PIN\, it’s your MMDD birthday (e.g. 0101 for January 1).
