DESCRIPTION:Vertical Oyster Garden Workshop with CCA Florida and Conservation Florida | Saturday\, October 3 | 9 a.m. – Noon | Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University\nSt. Johns RIVERKEEPER has partnered with CCA Florida and Jacksonville University to launch a Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) program in the Jacksonville area. Vertical Oyster Gardens consist of recycled oyster shells that are strung together to create habitat for new oysters along with many other species of marine invertebrates. A single adult oyster has the ability to filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and each VOG can accumulate dozens of new oysters in just a few months. \nSpecial thanks to Conservation Florida for partnering with us on this workshop! \nVolunteers can expect to take part in the following tasks:\n\nShovel shells into buckets/ wheelbarrow and bring to work site\nCut rope lengths\, burn ends\, make ends tight so shells can string easily\, tie a knot at one end of the rope\nDrill hole in each shell with drill press\nString shells and tie off ropes\n\nBring garden gloves if you have them as the oyster shells can be hard and rigid. \nRSVP\nReserve your spot in here! Beneath the surface\, they’re one of nature’s most powerful tools — a keystone species that filters and cleans vast volumes of water\, buffers shorelines from storms\, and anchors entire estuary ecosystems. \nBut the reefs are vanishing. Ninety percent of the world’s ancient oyster reefs have collapsed in the last thirty years\, and Florida’s own Apalachicola Bay is slipping toward the same fate under the pressures of pollution\, coastal development\, and overharvesting. The film makes a hopeful case: shell recycling\, artificial reefs\, and freshwater management can still turn the tide. \nThat work is already underway right here in Jacksonville. DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Ocklawaha with Adventure Outpost | Saturday\, October 10 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Ocklawaha River (Palatka)\nJoin us for a 3.5 hour paddling tour of the Ocklawaha River with expert guide Lars Andersen! We will begin just downstream from the Kirkpatrick (formerly Rodman) Dam. This section of the Ocklawaha below the dam is wide and braided. There are numerous side streams and winding forks that make this an interesting area to explore. \nThe wide\, open channel of the Ocklawaha River offers an excellent panorama of river forests and swamps that\, in places\, stretch a half-mile back from the main channel\, and are a refuge for a wonderful menagerie of wildlife with very little sign of civilization. As history buffs dream of Acuera warriors and the steamboats which once plied these waters\, birders and animal lovers will be busy with their binoculars and cameras. In addition to its scenic beauty\, this stretch of the Ocklawaha also serves as an excellent “living museum” of man’s 15\,000 year relationship with nature in Florida. \nA couple of hours into our downstream paddle\, we will stop for lunch at the site of the former river settlement/steamboat landing of Davenport. The event will showcase the River Oaks Park in San Marco\, its lush plant life\, Craig Creek\, and the St Johns River. The event will illustrate the role the park plays in sustaining community vibrancy and resiliency. It will also illustrate the role the park and its creek play in sustaining St Johns River health. \nThe outing will begin at the bridge in River Oaks Park near Brookwood Road and proceed westward along Craig Creek to the St Johns River and then back to the bridge. The event will include a walk through the park to collect trash and debris with stops to discuss the park vegetation and the role it plays in sustaining river health. Contact meredith@stjohnsriverkeeper.org to learn more\, or become a sponsor here. \nOyster Roast is supported by a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver Forever Event Fund\, est. 2015.\nAbout the Delores Barr Weaver Forever Event Fund: \nDelores Barr Weaver established this Fund in 2015 to provide a $10\,000 grant annually to support a premiere fundraising event in perpetuity at 20 local nonprofit organizations. This grant will provide a permanent source of income for organizations that Mrs. Weaver has generously supported for many years. It is her hope that other individuals will make similar permanent gifts to organizations that have been important to them. This Fund is one of a collection of Funds established by Delores Barr Weaver at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Mrs. Weaver has an extraordinary legacy of philanthropy\, and she has provided transformative support to dozens of nonprofit organizations that uplift\, enlighten and advance our community. Her establishment of the Delores Barr Weaver Fund ($50 million) in 2012 was the largest gift in The Community Foundation’s history.

Despite improvements\, their mission reveals ongoing challenges to this historic waterway’s ecosystem. \nThis powerful film chronicles the decades-long commitment\, passion\, and grassroots advocacy required to protect and preserve the vital river ecosystem of the Hudson River.
