Our Mission

is to work on behalf of the community for clean and healthy waters in the St. Johns River, its tributaries and its wetlands, through citizen-based advocacy.

We Believe

that the unique natural beauty and ecological integrity of the St. Johns River System must be preserved and remain accessible for the enjoyment and benefit of current and future generations.

We Promise

to advocate for policies and restoration actions based on sound science and responsible economics, and to speak on behalf of the river with an independent voice that citizens can trust.

Our Work

How does Riverkeeper accomplish its mission?

Our Work
  • Patrol the River on a regular basis in our Riverkeeper boat to identify and investigate pollution problems and make sure the responsible parties are held accountable.
  • Hold polluters and government agencies accountable for their actions.
  • Ensure that our environmental laws and regulations are implemented and enforced.
  • Educate the public about the St. Johns River and the issues affecting its health.
  • Participate on important committees, such as Mayor John Peyton’s Environmental Advisory Committee, City of Jacksonville Parks Task Force Committee, the St. Johns River Alliance, and the Water Quality Committee of the Jacksonville Waterways Commission.
  • Routinely attend public meetings and participate in the public policy decision-making process to represent the interests of the river, our members, and the public at large.
  • Respond to citizens’ complaints and work with them to resolve problems.

St. Johns Riverkeeper Current Projects

Habitat Loss:

Riverkeeper continues to lead the effort to prevent nearly 30 acres of mature wetlands that form the headwaters of Julington and Pottsburg Creeks from being destroyed by the proposed Freedom Commerce Center development.

Sedimentation:

Riverkeeper is responding to citizen complaints to help reduce construction run-off and sedimentation in our rivers and streams.

Bacteria in the tributaries:

Riverkeeper is continuing to work with regulatory agencies and wastewater treatment companies to reduce bacteria pollution in our rivers and streams.

Currently, the Riverkeeper is a member of the Tributary Assessment Team (TAT) that is working to indentify sources of bacteria in our tributaries and to develop methods to reduce or eliminate those sources.

Nutrient pollution in the river:

Riverkeeper, in partnership with the Clean Water Network, successfully convinced the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen the nutrient reduction targets for the lower St. Johns River.

Education and Outreach:

In addition, Riverkeeper developed a River Friendly Yards program and Green Monster television program to educate homeowners about stormwater runoff and nutrient pollution.

What is St. Johns Riverkeeper?

St. Johns Riverkeeper is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves as a full-time advocate and "watchdog" for the St. Johns River, its watershed, and the public to whom it belongs.

Riverkeeper works to improve water quality in the St. Johns River and its tributaries, to protect critical habitat in the St. Johns River watershed, to provide meaningful public access to our waterways, and to educate our members and the public about the River and the issues that impact its health.

Riverkeeper is a membership-based organization. Riverkeeper does not receive any government funding but must rely on the generous support of businesses and concerned citizens that recognize the value and importance of the St. Johns River and our work to protect it.
